WHO AND WHAT IS AGAPE IN AFRICA MINISTRIES (AiA)?
1. VISION:
Our vision is to help the local indigenous churches in every country in Africa to plant Bible-believing, Christ-centred churches in every village, town and city on the continent of Africa.
2. MISSION OBJECTIVES:
AiA was started for the purpose of more effectively helping the suffering Church in Africa. We are committed to encouraging and supporting co-operative, nation-wide church planting in every country in Africa. Working with and alongside other ministries, we seek to improve the quality of Church life and ministry in the countries where the Lord Jesus Christ has opened the doors for us.
To achieve this the leadership crisis must be addressed. Very few of the current pastors or Church leaders, have had any or formal theological training in the Christian doctrine. We believe the following strategy could be of great help for the abovementioned situation.
2.1 In-service training
We go to where these leaders live and work and present training to them through seminars and/or workshops with materials in their context.
2.2 Video and/or audio
These media can help our efforts tremendously, especially where the cost and distances involved makes in-service training difficult. In the Copper belt province of Zambia we are already making use of video training. We hope to establish more of these schools in Democratic Republic Of Congo (former Zaire), Botswana, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Angola and West Africa, as the funds permit.
WALK THRU THE BIBLE; VIDEO MINISTRY:
We have entered into a partnership with WALK THRU THE BIBLE VIDEO MINISTRY (USA). We also now use these video's to teach the students and Church leaders on various subjects.
2.3 Equipping and training of laity
We assist pastors to equip and develop members of the body of Christ for ministry (Eph 4:11-12). Every church must become a training centre for members. On an ongoing basis we minister in local churches on the subjects of spiritual gifts, home cell groups, church planting, identifying and developing of leaders and the great commission to the church.
3. STRATEGY FOR MINISTRY
God's strategy of evangelism and discipling the whole world is through the local church (Math 28:19-20). Therefore every local church should have a program of training mature leaders to plant more mature growing churches.
4. CHURCH PLANTING
We believe there should be a Christ-centered, Bible-believing congregation for every people/ethnic group within walking distance, on the continent. We believe the whole Body of Christ should be involved in the great commission in every village or community. This requires a Christ-centered, Bible-believing church for every community and village. We believe that the necessary manpower and resources are in Africa, although undeveloped, and in desperate need of training, mobilizing and materials.
We have started our first Church Planting School in Mufulira (Copper belt Province, Zambia). We are currently busy translating the material into Chibemba (for Zambia), and French (for Central and West Africa).
Up to date we have trained about 300 church planters. Some of these brothers have already planted more than 14 churches each (about 1,000 Churches planted).
Church Planting Schools:
I have been to Nigeria and West Africa now several times, and there will be bishops and senior Church Leaders from Nigeria to come for training to ZAMBIA. We also plan to open a Church Planting School in NIGERIA and West Africa (for the French speaking peoples). There are no such schools in that part of the continent.
We are in need of a couple that could stay in Mufulira, Zambia, fulltime, to look after the school and its administration. We have already bought a house in Mufulira, which serves as a base for our operations, as well as accommodation, for our visitors
Our responsibilities include:
- Identifying leaders and building relationship with those who have a "calling" confirmed from God;
- Training materials to equip mature men and women to go and do the job;
- Mobilizing the "harvest force" to bring in the "harvest" in their own culture; to train the "harvest" to become part of the "harvest force".
The latest statistics on church growth and world evangelism puts the continent of Africa in the lead with the most Christians, percentage-wise compared to other continents. This momentum needs to be continued with encouragement and support ministries.
Since 1990 I have been going to Central-Africa, and done exactly what has been described above.
SOME FOCUS AREAS:
The following areas are where we have been working since 1993 and where we have planted churches.
MALAWI:
The YAO-tribe:
This tribe lives between Lake Malawi (Eastern side) right into the Northern part of Mozambique. This is a tribe where hundreds of villages have never been reached with the Gospel of Jesus Christ
Traditionally, for as long as the tribal leaders can remember, these people are Muslims. There are no Christian churches. The Lord, however, has given us open doors, and we have now started about 10 cell churches, where we are busy training leaders to lead these churches and plant more. We have a co-worker, Pieter Loots, 33 (single), who lives here, without any guaranteed support, who is a tremendous help, but because of limited funds we are making slow progress.
The way the Lord opened the doors among the YAO-tribe, was when we prayed for some children and the Lord healed them miraculously.
ZAMBIA:
Here we are very involved in 5 provinces: Northern province, Central province, Luapula province, Copper belt province and the Northwestern province.
Northern province:
In Kasama, the capitol, we have established very good relationships with all the local leaders, and we regularly conduct seminars, teaching them leadership development, church planting, home cell training etc. Some of these churches have now planted new churches in the Mutuka villages (just below lake Tanganyika, near Mbala), also Chinsali (below Tanzania).
We are also in the process of opening up a Church Planting School in Kasama.
Luapula Province:
Around lake Bangweulu (Samfya, Lubwe, Cholansenga villages) we have been able to assist local leaders to plant churches. At Cholansenga, we have a very skinny lady that has now planted 8 churches. She walks from sunrise to sunset from one village to the next, with only water and no food. She does not know how far these villages are apart, except that it takes one day's walking.
Around the Luwingu area there are the Seleketi and Musungu villages where we have been able to assist about 10 local churches. Here we have whole villages that belong to the local church.
Copperbelt Province:
In and around the following towns and cities we have established very good relationships with most of the local leaders: Ndola, Kitwe, Mufulira, Murundu, Chingola and Chililabombwe. Here are hundreds of leaders and churches that we have been assisting, teaching and training since 1993. Churches that were struggling with 50 and less membership are now growing dynamically with some of up to 500 members, and reaching out to other areas and townships, where no churches exist. I can name literally hundreds of names of pastors who have benefited from our involvement. We, however, could do much more if we should have the required resources.
North-Western Province:
Solwezi, the capitol, is where we have about 8-10 churches that we work with, by also assisting with training and teaching.
Western Province:
We are assisting one of our spiritual sons, Pastor Jones Munkanda, who has planted a new ministry on the border with Angola, the Chavuma area and Zambezi.
Central Province:
We also have a group of churches in Lusaka (Capitol of Zambia), with whom we are working. There will also be a group of pastors from Lusaka attending the Church Plant School. We also then want to start a School in Lusaka.
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC, former Zaire):
In Lubumbashi, the second largest city in the DRC, next to Kinshasa, we have been working with about all of the local leaders and churches. We have been ministering also in Likasi and Kolwezi, training and teaching church and congregational leaders. The people here in DRC of course speak French.
ANGOLA:
In the Cazombo-district, the Northeast, we have helped pastors with training and development. The Lord, by His grace and mercy, has honored these brother's efforts and perseverance, and gave a breakthrough by raising 3 people from the dead. Traditionally these people were ancestral worshippers and therefore the villages were very closed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Now all over this area the villages are opening up and even the chiefs begged these pastors to come and preach the Gospel to their people.
ZIMBABWE:
In and around Harare we have about 12-15 churches that we have been ministering to. Near Chegutu (+-150 km, west of Harare) are the Mondoro villages, where one of our pastors planted a church over a weekend while preaching at a funeral service. The Spirit of the Lord worked so powerful that just about the whole village came to the Lord.
Zvishavane is in the South-West (towards Bulawayo), where we also have churches in the villages that we minister to on a regular basis. We would like to do more, but we lack the funds. Rua, towards the Eastern part of the country, is another area where there are churches that have begged us to come and help.
BOTSWANA:
We have helped a brother, Pastor Rodney Munkondya, from Malawi, to plant a new Church in Selebi-Phikwe, which is really growing strong. Reinhardt Bonke, the world known evangelist said, after a crusade in Botswana, that Botswana is one of the hardest countries in Africa to preach the Gospel. The Lord has really given us a breakthrough in this area.
NIGERIA:
We are in the process of building strong relationships with various Church leaders in and around Nigeria (West-Africa; countries like Rep of Benin, Togo, Ghana etc). We trust the Lord to help us to also set up Church Planting Schools in this part of the Continent.
